What to Expect on Your First Indoor Karting Session

Planning your first indoor karting visit can feel a bit daunting if you're not sure what to expect. Here's what typically happens and how to make the most of your experience.

Before you arrive:

Most venues require advance booking, especially at weekends. Check the minimum age and height requirements—these vary between locations. Wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing and avoid loose items that could get caught. Closed-toe shoes are essential. Many people wear trainers, though some venues provide racing suits for a more authentic experience.

At the venue:

You'll check in and receive a safety briefing. Pay close attention to this—it covers essential information about the track, kart operation, and safety rules. You'll be assigned a kart and given a helmet, which staff will fit properly. Never adjust the helmet yourself once it's fitted.

Before racing, you'll have a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the kart. Get comfortable with the pedals and steering. The first few laps are always slower as you learn the track layout and how your kart responds. This is completely normal and expected.

During your session:

Focus on smooth, progressive inputs rather than jerky movements. Accelerate smoothly and brake in straight lines. Don't worry about other drivers initially—concentrate on finding your rhythm and understanding the track. As you complete more laps, you'll naturally start to go faster.

Most indoor sessions last between 10 and 20 minutes of actual driving time, which is surprisingly tiring. Your arms and legs will feel the effort, so don't be surprised if you're tired afterwards.

Common beginner mistakes:

  • Braking too late and losing control
  • Turning the steering wheel too sharply
  • Accelerating mid-corner instead of on straights
  • Not using the full width of the track

After your session, many venues offer timing data or video footage. Review this to see where you can improve. Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Indoor karting is great fun, and every visit teaches you something new about vehicle control and racing craft.
